Interview with Cameron Tonkinwise

In March 2024, the Transition Design Institute hosted a special workshop led by Fritjof Capra (and facilitated by Jen Mason), engaging Transition Design doctoral students and alumni in an in-depth discussion of his latest work, The Principles of Life. The session built upon Capra’s decades of research in systems thinking, offering participants a unique opportunity to explore the fundamental principles that govern living systems and their relevance to complex societal transitions.

Capra began the workshop by introducing the key principles outlined in his new work, describing how they interconnect and shape systemic behavior. He explained how The Principles of Life represents the culmination of his long-standing inquiry into the nature of complex systems, providing a framework for understanding how systems evolve, self-organize, and transform—critical considerations for those working on systemic change and designing for transitions.

The conversation reinforced the essential role of systems thinking in designing interventions that support long-term, sustainable change.
